BRIEF HISTORY OF NEW TAFO CIRCUIT
The process to attain a circuit status began when Rev. Edward Foster Nyarko was transferred from Kumasi Wesley Methodist Church, Adum to the New Tafo Dunwell Methodist Church in 1985.  The New Tafo Section of the Kumasi Circuit had Dunwell as the head over the following societies: Suame, Maakro, Anomagye, Mpatasie, Breman and Kronom.
Rev. Nyarko nurtured the New Tafo Section, but just before submitting the application to Kumasi Circuit Quarterly Meeting for a circuit status, Suame and the remaining societies withdrew from the New Tafo Section to form the Suame Section, leaving Dunwell alone.  This crumbled the ambition.
Meanwhile, all societies in the Trede Section were placed under New Tafo Dunwell Section but the societies were not strong enough.  Also, there existed a long distance between them and Dunwell so, the quest for circuit status was shelved for a while.
Dunwell Society therefore decided to plant and open more churches to rekindle the ambition of attaining circuit status.  The outcome was the founding  of Moshie Zongo church in June, 1986 and its inauguration on 5th October, 1986 by Rt. Rev. Maj. (Rtd.) E.G. Bonney – then Chairman of the Kumasi District.  Moshie Zongo was named Freeman Methodist Church of Tafo Nhyiaeso.
Thereafter, Dunwell leaders met, discussed and convinced leaders and caretakers of Sokoban and Daban societies to team up with Dunwell and Freeman societies to seek for the circuit status.  Rev. E.F. Nyarko was transferred to Breman Asikuma Sec. School (C/R) in 1987 and was succeeded by Rev. N. Agyei Mensah who only spent a year at Dunwell and left in 1988 – even though his tenure was short he made an effort to increase the membership of the church.
Furthermore the assumption of office by Rev. Jubilant Boakye Danquah in October, 1988 revived the pursuit of the circuit status.  He submitted the application to the Kumasi Circuit Quarterly Meeting.  It was approved.  It was subsequently forwarded to the Kumasi Synod.  The Kumasi Synod approved of the application and further forwarded it to the 28th Annual Conference of the Methodist Church, Ghana held at Wesley Chapel, Sunyani in August, 1989.  The conference under the Presidency of Most Rev. Dr. S. A. Stephens moved New Tafo section to Stage “B”.
By the grace of God, the Kumasi Synod under the then chairmanship of Rt. Rev. Dr. Samuel Asante Antwi, recommended New Tafo Section to the 29th Annual Conference of the Methodist Church at Koforidua in August, 1990 for full circuit status.  The Conference, presided over by Most Rev. Prof. K.A. Dickson, approved the recommendation for full circuit status.

INAUGURATION
Consequently, New Tafo Circuit was inaugurated on Sunday 17th March, 1991 by Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Asante-Antwi, then chairman and General Superintendent of the Kumasi District.  It comprised four (4) societies, namely: Dunwell, Sokoban Wesley, Daban Calvary, and Tafo Nhyiaeso Freeman.  The societies increased to twelve (12) but the Achiase society was later  given to Asawase circuit for pastoral reasons, leaving eleven (11) including the four (4) founding societies:
i) Dichemso Dunwell                   vii)   Moshie Zongo, Living Water
ii) Sokoban Wesley                    viii)  Ampeyoo – Krofofrom Emmanuel
iii) Daban Calvary                        ix)    Yennyawoso, Good shepherd
iv) Tafo Nhyiaeso Freeman         x)    Ashtwon Mt. Olives
v) Ampabame No. 1 Bethel        xi)  New Tafo Gethsemane (Old site)
vi) Kwanwoma
PROJECTS
Development and extension works have taken place in all the societies.  Dunwell built two big halls and named them after their pioneers and founding members; namely Baiden Hall and Fordjour Hall with a Sanitary annex.  Walls of the church and manse were rebuilt with stores, many of which are occupied by circuit organizations and some church members.  (Additional stores have been built.).
The Manse in particular, has undergone various renovation and refurbishment.  The latest being a complete re-roofing, re-wiring, extension of the frontal and back view to accommodate a newly created master-bedroom, new sitting and dining rooms (all with modern tiles and ceiling fittings), a new office and a library for the Supt. Minister and all the verandas and doors fortified with metal burglar proof gates.  All electrical and plumbing gadgets have been given a modern touch.
The Circuit Office also saw a facelift in the last few years.  It was furnished with a new computer set, large size photocopier, a library, money safe and cabinet etc..  An administrator has been appointed to enhance the administrative work of the circuit office with the Circuit Steward enjoying a separate office to operate from.  Transportation service has been improved with the acquisition of a new model four Wheel Toyota Prado (the old BMW is still available to complement movements).
The New Tafo Circuit has undertaken a sachet water project and also drilled a bole hole which is powered by electricity which supply water to the Circuit Manse and Dunwell Society.
ACHIEVEMENTS
New Tafo Circuit successfully hosted two (2) Synods of Kumasi Diocese.  First, the 36th Synod in April, 1997 with 42 circuits, including the Effiduasi and Obuasi Dioceses.   Second, the 44th Synod in April, 2005; this time without Obuasi and Effiduasi Diocese.  The circuit also hosted two Diocesan F.K. meetings.
The spiritual growth over the period has been very significant.  For instance, in the 1997/98 Connexional Local Preachers Exams, New Tafo Circuit presented Twenty – four (24) candidates and had 100% pass.  This result placed the circuit first in the Kumasi Diocese and third in the Connexion.
Again, a number of ministerial products have been recorded by the circuit, including one Bishop and two Supt. Ministers in the persons of Rt. Rev. Hayford Aduse - Poku and Very Rev. Badu-Bota and Very Rev. Kwaku Adusei Acheampong respectively.
The organizations have been prominent in their respective diocesan and connexional activities; thus, projecting the image of the circuit.
The New Tafo Circuit has effective and functioning administrative coordinating offices of the church i.e. Coordinating office for:  Ministries,  Finance & Development, Social Services, Education & Youth
SCHOOL
The WESCO Annex Primary School has undergone some constructional works over the period.  These include an office for the headteacher, a wall all round the school land and a KG block built by the Dunwell Women’s Fellowship. Sokoban School has added some classrooms.    Wesco Annex Primary School is planning to extend its blocks to accommodate a Junior High School in the nearest future.
EVANGELISM
New Tafo Circuit acquired her own P.A, System and Electrical fittings for her evangelical programmes.
The greatest achievement worth mentioning is the crusade and its subsequent founding of the Dunwell Church at Nyankontre in the Sene or Kwame Danso District, with a permanent caretaker stationed there in the person of Bro. Agyapong  Ntrah.  A permanent chapel structure is being built for the church.
FINANCE
In spite of our size (strength of our societies), New Tafo Circuit has always been paying her assessment and other financial obligations to the Diocese on time.  Dunwell for instance, has started operating a new Credit Union by name Dichemso Methodist Cooperative Credit Union – solely owned by the church.
The circuit has instituted a scholarship scheme to assist brilliant but needy children in all the societies in the circuit.  The first recipient from Sokoban Society is studying at the University of Cape Coast.

                                                                                HISTORY OF DUNWELL SOCIETY
The history of Dunwell society dates back to the year 1950 when there was a small group of “Wesleyans” residing at New Tafo and C.P.C.  and worshipping at Wesley Church,  Adum, in Kumasi.  In view of the distance from New Tafo to Adum, this group decided to come together and worship at New Tafo instead of journeying to Adum.  Notable among the group was Bro. Thomas Kwadwo Fordjour, (of blessed memory).  The group then contacted the late Rev. J.E. Addo who was then the Superintendent Minister at Wesley for permission to worship at New Tafo.  This was on the 25th day of December, 1949.  Early in 1950, the late Bro. T.K. Fordjour made a second passionate appeal to the Late Rev.  Addo who accepted the idea and therefore invited catchiest M.C. Baiden (of blessed memory) to assist the group to acquire a piece of land at New Tafo.  This was successful, and work on a structure was started.  In the meantime, one Madam Akua Afriyie offered her house to the group for worship.  This group also included some Presbyterians residing at New Tafo and C.P.C.  They worshipped regularly at dawn and in the evenings of Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  On Sundays, the Presbyterians amongst them left for their mother church at Ramseyer to worship.
The number grew rapidly and steadily.  As a result, the group decided to move into the uncompleted structure to worship.  It was hoped that moving into the structure would spur them on to develop the structure quickly.  In the words of Bro. T. F. Fordjour, the founder, “we were forced to move into the uncompleted wooden structure opposite the New Tafo Police station” (i.e. the old site), because the residence of Sister Akua Afriyie could no longer contain the number of worshippers. Prominent members who joined the church in March, 1957 were:  Mr.  & Mrs. Jacob Appiah, Boadi, E. K. Motchey, David Bobie, John Obimpeh, A.K. Bentil, sisters Elizabeth Sarpong and Mary Obeng.  Soon the members took to preaching the good news at dawn, particularly on Fridays and Sundays.  The sermons were interwoven with lyrics thus portraying the “Methodist Character”.
In 1952, the following officers were appointed to steer the affairs of the church.
Bro.  John Obimpeh - Caretaker
Bro. M. A. Baiden - Assist Caretaker
Bro. T. K. Fordjour - Secretary
Bro. Joisiah Incoom - Chapel Keeper
Rev. J. E. Addo was a source of encouragement by his frequent visit to this budding church.(Preaching Post.).  He also arranged for the ministerial students at the Trinity College (now Freeman Centre) as well as students of the Wesley College Preaching Band to visit and interact with the church, especially on Sundays.  The church therefore benefitted immensely from the dedicated service of these students who were preachers, music teachers, Sunday school teachers, bible class Leaders and so on.
In 1953, the new General Superintendent and Chairman of the Kumasi District, Rev. M.K. Debrah and his administration, elevated the new congregation (preaching post) to a society status; Bro. M.A. Baiden was then appointed as the first society steward of the church.  The quick growth of the church necessitated the provision of a larger chapel.  The effort of Catechist M.C. Baiden, Brother M.A. Baiden, T.K. Fordjour, Jacob Appiah and others earned the church a piece of land at the present site near Serwaa Nyarko  Senior High School at Dichemso.
A building committee was formed in 1960 to supervise the project with Bro. M.A. Baiden as chairman and Bro. A. K. Bentil as secretary.  Though each member of the society was levied six pounds (£6) towards the projects Bro. M.A. Baiden, a professional building contractor could be singled out as the major financier of the Chapel project.  The membership then was over two hundred (200).  It is also worth mentioning here that Rev. M.K. Debrah threw his weight behind this project.
The stone- laying ceremony came off in 1966, officiated by the chairman of the District, Rev. M.K. Debrah.  He christened the society “Dunwell Memorial Methodist Church” in memory of Rev. Joseph Rhodes Dunwell, who brought Methodism into the country.  The Dunwell Chapel then had a seating capacity of about 800 worshippers.

Pastoral Oversight
The rapid growth of the society necessitated the appointment of a full time catechist to give pastoral oversight to the ever growing society.  Mr. M.K. Akuoko was therefore appointed the first catechist to the Dunwell society

The struggle for circuit status
The stationing of M.K. Akuoko to the New Tafo Dunwell Methodist Church as a sectional catechist in 1978 brought into being the New Tafo Section with Dunwell as the headquarters.  The other societies in the section included Suame, Maakro, Anomagye, Mpatasie, Breman and Kronom.  Rev. J.K. Sagoe came in as catchiest and later became the first Minister of the Dunwell Methodist Church.  This paved the way for Dunwells’ request for a circuit status.

Rev. Jubilant Boakye – Danquah (1988-1990)
Rev. Jubilant Boakye Danquah assumed duty here in October, 1988, when everything was set for the application for the circuit status.  Dunwell submitted her application through the Kumasi Circuit Quarterly Meeting, and the Kumasi Synod forwarded it to the Conference of the Methodist Church Ghana, held at Sunyani in August, 1989.  The Sunyani Conference did not approve the request for circuit but raised the status of the New Tafo Section from stage A to B.  The Koforidua Conference held in August, 1990 finally granted the request and raised the New Tafo Section to a full-fledged circuit which was inaugurated in March, 1991.

Very Rev. S.B. Afranie (1990-1995)
Very Rev. S. B. Afranie assumed duty in the circuit in 1990 and led the circuit to celebrate its inauguration on 17th March, 1991.  Evangelism was his paramount objective because New Tafo Circuit had Dunwell and three other smaller societies.  It therefore came as a challenge to him to plant more churches.  The following societies: Kwanwoma, Ampabame, Good Shepherd and Achiase society (Later given to Asawase Circuit for pastoral reasons) were planted.  His administration bought   a new car which replaced the one bequeathed to the Circuit by Kumasi Circuit.  Extensions on the Fodjour and Baiden Halls were undertaken.

Very Rev. O. S. K. Boakye (1995-2000)
Very Rev. O.S.K. Boakye took over the mantle from Very Rev. S.B. Afranie in October, 1995.  The building of stores, further extensions to Baiden & Fordjour Halls with Sanitary Annex, were undertaken.  The Wesco Annex Primary School wall was constructed during his tenure of office.    Through intensive evangelism, Mt. Olives at Ash-Town, Ampeyoo Krofofrom as well as Moshie – Zongo societies were planted.
The old Mitsubishi Gallant circuit car was disposed of and a new BMW Saloon Car (which is still in use) was bought.  It was during his time that the Circuit hosted the 36th Synod for the first time in 1997.  He instituted the two Services.  Very Rev. O.S.K. Boakye was transferred to Suame Circuit in 2000.

Very Rev. Comforter Akushie (2000 – 2001)
Very Rev. Comforter Akushie, deceased, took over from the year 2000 – 2001.  He initiated the purchase of a society bus, and led in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the circuit.  He was transferred to Accra in 2001.

Very Rev. Jacob E. Acquah (2001 – 2003)
Very Rev. Acquah arrived at Dunwell Methodist in 2001 and saw to it that the Chapel was panelled and acquired a society bus, the due diligence of  which was initiated by Late Very Rev. Comforter Akushie.

Very Rev. Francis K. Andoh (2003 – 2006)
Very Rev. Andoh assumed duty at Dunwell in 2003.  He also continued with God’s work.  He hosted the 44th Synod in 2005.  The metallic and glass pulpit, rail at the sanctuary and the upper halls of the Chapel were built during his time.  He was transferred to Effiduase Diocese in 2006.

Very Rev. Joshua K.A. Orgen (2006-2011)
Very Rev. Orgen took over the Superintendency of the Circuit from Very Rev. Francis Andoh in October 2006.  Under his untiring leadership, the following have been achieved:

Rt. Rev. James Baffour Awuah (2011- 2014)
Rt. Rev. James Baffour Awuah came to take over from very Rev. Joshua K. A. Orgen after he had completed his tenure as Bishop of Sunyani Diocese in October 2011.  Unfortunately he had to bow out of service on health reasons.  However he undertook the following project during the period under review.
1. Construction of a modern security Gate at the main entrance to the church premises.
2. Re-installation of an electronic sign post put up by Dunwell Choir as their 50th Anniversary project.
3. Making out spaces for car park at the fore-court of the church to avoid conjunction.

Very Rev. Samuel Kwaku Opoku  (Ootober 2014 to 2017)
Very Rev. Samuel K. Opoku took over the mantle from Rt. Rev. James Baffour Awuah as Superintendent Minister for New Tafo Circuit.  Everything points to the fact that evangelism and spiritual development of the church are part of his agenda.  Notable among them are:-
1. Teaching on crucial Biblical themes or issues on 1st Sundays of the month instead of the normal preaching sessions.
2. Introduction of what he terms “JERICHO HOUR”- an hour specially set aside for prayers on Wednesdays. Between 7.00pm – 8.00pm.

Freeman Society was one of the four societies which formed the New Tafo Circuit in 1990.  The idea to plant a Methodist Church at Moshie Zongo was first mooted by the Dunwell Youth Fellowship in late 1978, but did not materialize until 1985 when Late Rev. Edward Foster Nyarko assumed duty at Dunwell.  The converts of a successful crusade held at Moshie Zongo from 14th to 20th of April, 1986 formed the nucleus of the Moshie Zongo Church (Freeman).  Also in attendance was the congregation of Dunwell Society, Dichemso.

THE HISTORY OF THE GOOD SHERPHED METHODIST CHURCH YENNYAWOSO
The Good Shepherd Methodist Church is one of the youngest in the New Tafo Circuit. It was established on the 26th day of July 1998 after a four- day crusade which was held at Yennyawoso near Barnes International School under the Superintendent Minister of the Circuit at the time, the Very Rev. O.S.K Boakye, now Bishop of Goaso Diocese, Rev. I.K Twum as the Auxiliary Minister. Evangelist Emmanuel Kofi Antwi now Superintendent Minister of Wioso- Circuit and Evangelist Kwabena Owusu Achaw supported by the Freeman Society Tafo Nhyiaeso and the then two Circuit Stewards Bro. Kwasi Acheampong Gyasi and Bro. William Okoh. The church was started with twelve (12) people named below: Paul Danquah, Bridget Owusu Sekyere, Hellen Mensah Bonsu, Gifty Mensah Bonsu, Roselyn Poku Sarkodie, Rita Antwi Boadu, Patience Agyekum, Dorcas Pokuaa, Ama Serwaa Kagya, Gloria Asantewaa, Naomi Konadu and Rita Fosuaa, only Ama Serwaa Kagya is still with the church.
A great deal is owed to certain individuals of the Freeman society who won more souls through house to house evangelism and dawn broadcasts to raise the membership of the church. Notably among them are; Evangelist Patrick Owusu Ansah, Bros. Seth Osei Kwadwo, Isaac Boahen, Stephen Sefa Danso, Emmanuel Appiah, Kofi Asamoah Baafi, Kwadwo Boateng, Sis. Grace Adjei, Sis. Elizabeth Agyekum, Sis. Comfort Asamoah, Sis. Naomi Offei and Sis. Comfort Achiaa Afrifa
At present the church has two hundred and twenty nine (229) members of which one hundred and fifty four (154) are female and seventy five are males (75). The Sunday school has an enrollment of hundred (100) children, sixty (60) are girls and forty (40) are boys.
